Monster Encounters

It would be nice if monsters one is questing for had a slightly higher chance of appearing. It could be done with one line of code, a terrain-relevent quest-test:

 if (player has quest here) 
   {10% chance of needed monster appearing} 
   else 
   {standard random monster roll}

Also, not losing an adventure when monsters flee would be less frustrating. Loss of HP and the time it takes clicking combat options is enough of a penalty. Dorotea 11:38, 24 December (EST)

Quests

General Ideas

Having random quests pop up would add a little variety to the click-click-click portion of adventuring. For example, when adventuring in Farmland, a farmer could occasionally ask for help exterminating a bunch of annoying chicken-hawks that are decimating his chickens, generating a quest to kill five of them. Hills or mountains might have an occasional request from a dwarf to kill ettins or ogres or even do a little mining. Dorotea 11:59, 24 December (EST) Klosie backs this idea :)
Balancing all quests of the same level by making sure they take approximately the same number of turns to complete. There will be quite a bit of random variation, of course, but the most annoying problems with monsters that don't show up or items that don't drop would be to (as noted above) increase the odds of the needed monster appearing or required item dropped when a player has a particular quest. --Dorotea 11:47, 1 January 2006 (CST)

Tier 1 Ideas

Balancing the difficulty of these quests would be very helpful. For example, some quests can take hundreds of adventures with no result, due to a rare or two randomly dropping, while a few are a simple matter of killing fairly common monsters. Others can be quicky completed by buying cheap & common drops in bulk (though these do help the economy quite a bit).--Dorotea 11:47, 1 January 2006 (CST)

Tier 2 Ideas

Again, these need to be balanced so that they are of equal difficulty, i.e. require equal skill or time. One shouldn't have to complete several other Tier 2 quests in order to complete another Tier 2 quest. (e.g. I've spent over a thousand turns trying to kill that blasted Dark Mage, buying up my stats & available Arts and still getting my head handed to me on a plate whenever it shows up, yet I already have the items needed to complete a couple of other Tier 2 quests.) --Dorotea 11:47, 1 January 2006 (CST)

Tier 3 Ideas

As a lot of people are now finished/finishing the Tier 2 quests, I (Buffer) would like to say a few basic ideas for Tier 3 things:
- Stats, not of classes/cities
  - Instead of having the quests be available from one city and one class, make them from two cities, both of the ones that require a certain stat. Travelling between the two would probably be required. And possibly alliances would be made, maybe with you being a messenger, etc. ~Buffer
- Tokens and Transporting
  - If the remaining cities' tokens aren't implemented and given as rewards for Tier 3 quests, I'll die of frustration. :P And what about a skill or item that allows for more than 2 teleports per day? ~Buffer

Skills

Allowing players to buff each other would increase socialization (which, in the long run, gives any online game its staying power).
Changing skills from class-oriented to more general would allow for greater variety and development of skill trees, with more advanced skills based on simpler ones. For example:
- Art of Rangers could be Wilderness Survival, in turn a prerequisite for a
  - Foraging skill, which would allow the player to find more food when foraging in wilderness areas (a % increase in chance of food/drink drops), or a
  - Long Shot skill (a large bonus to initiative when armed with a bow).
  - Tame Beast skill (when in wilderness areas, tame a creature to fight for 5 turns)
- Art of Mages could be Magical Talent, a prerequisite for:
  - Create Fire, allowing players to cook meat outside a kitchen
  - Chill Air, decreasing monsters' initiative (in turn a prereq for some sort of damage-dealing Ice Shield)
  - Summon Wind (-3DEX to opponents for 5 turns)
- Art of Knights could be Formal Weapons Training (or some such), allowing:
  - Courtly Grace (DEX+1 per level), or
  - Feudal Priviledges (an increase in food drops on Farmland), or
  - Swords Skill (+3DEX when armed with a sword)
- Art of Barbarians could be Barbaric Fighting Style allowing:
  - Barbaric Strength (STR+1 per level)
  - Barbaric Health (CON+1 per level)
  - Intimidation (3MP for Initiative+3 for 5 turns)
- Art of Necromancers could be Necromancy (a bonus when fighting undead), allowing:
  - Dispel Undead (a 5MP blast that automatically does 25HP of damage to undead)
  - Ghastly Apparition (5MP for 3 turns of +5 Initiative)
  - Aura of Death (+1 Damage per attack for five turns for 5MP)
Bards could learn songs or new instruments
Clerics could gain additional powers and favor from their deity

etc.

Different combinations of basic skills could be required for more esoteric abilities, for example, Magical Talent + Necromancy could allow a Summon Skeleton ability, similar to the Orc- or Fighter-summoning stones while Tame Beast + Courtly Grace would allow a player with Ranger and Knight skills a few extra moves with a Warhorse.

While this would require a bit of renaming, the basic functions of the current skills could remain the same while expanding the long-term utility of each basic skill. The basic database would require a little tweaking (adding fields to identify weapon types, etc.), but the long-term advantage would be a much more flexible system with far more skills and abilities for players to discover. Holds 2x as much water as a water bottle (counts as 6 drinks, but also 2x Adv)
Can be used with Corn Mash (= Corn + Fermentation Juice) to make Mason Jar of Moonshine

Mason Jar of Moonshine: Drink, 5 drinks, +5-7 Adventures, 3-5 turns of +8TR +2CON -2DEX -2INT and -2COS

Can pay the Druidic Guild in Mason to turn into a Mason Jar of Sunshine (for a quest or even more potent beverage)

Mason Jar of Sunshine: Drink, 7 drinks, 8-12 Adv, +10-20HP, +10-20MP

Food Drops

I'd like to see more food/drinks drop. Right now I can make one wine and 2 lembas a day. That leaves me to drink water and eat grilled fish to full. Water in my opinion is too expensive (it's fricken' water). 20 waters for 1k silver to me seems like extortion.--Mach5potato 07:57, 23 December 2005 (CST)

I agree with Mach5potato. Right now I'm looking for silver ores and I spend 150 adventures in the town only to get 1 bottle of whiskey on average. Water is overpriced. 50-something silver for about 5 turns and 5 XP (10 XP if you use the empty bottle) is not a good deal. Plus all item's drops are too low. It's hard to just make stone chips drop without any item drop increasers and it takes forever for newbies to get 5 bottles of vinegar.~OneWingedAngel

Allowing people to reuse empty water bottles at rivers & refill them some of the time (with perhaps a small random chance of losing the bottle or having something unwholesome or undrinkable float in. ;) ) would make sense. It use a number of turns to move onto the river square and players wouldn't get the extra xp from throwing away bottles, offsetting both some turn and xp gain. Epic Wars

Having cities attack each other instead of different classes would make more sense. Whoever heard of plumbers attacking lawyers (as much as they might ask for it!) or programmers attacking electricians? Given the number and location of cities, having them attack each other over your standard border (or in the case of Jeriston, Breckinridge, Mason, Aerondale, or Templeton, religious) disputes would provide a lot more rationale than simple "fighters attack healers." Plus, a win could allow the victorious city to gain a few extra items in its shop, e.g. a couple of Tomes in Generia if that city defeats Cairnorpia or some Forest Blood in Northwood if that city defeats Mason. (Or perhaps a few Mason jars of Moonshine or Masonic texts or... ;) ) This could provide players an additional incentive to travel to the outlying cities. Dorotea 13:44, 24 December (EST)

Providing extra, limited-availability, or special items only to players affiliated with a city in that city's stores would give people a little more reason to pick a side in an epic war. Maps

Eventually allowing high-level (e.g. stats all>65 and >15 skills) players to move off the edge of the main map and into "Here There Be Dragons" areas would provide a more interesting end-game. (I had sketches of adjoining areas prepared when I created the original map, hence all the terrain and features that spread off the edge of the main map.) The main problem would be the additional database load, but it seems to be holding up pretty well so far. Dorotea 13:54, 24 December (EST)

Since there's already cave-openings showing up here and there, it's apparent that dungeons will eventually be implemented. Having those dungeons and cavern networks connect & allowing players to take shortcuts between cities (as well as providing extra treasure and surprises for those who explore the deepest and farthest depths) would give them a use beyond your basic dungeon-slogging & monster-bashing. - "Just as you're about to slay his prize rooster, a poor farmer begs you to stop. It's one of his last remaining chickens and he asks you to hunt down the chicken-hawks that have been befouling his fowl's existence." Kill five chicken-hawks. Reward: Eggs & Wheat
- "You kill a barn cat only to have the owner of the barn ask you what you plan to do about the rats that have been eating his corn." Kill twenty rats. Reward: 10 ears of corn.

Hills
- "A bruised and battered dwarf asks you to help him defeat the Ettins that have taking up dwarf-tossing or at least talk them into trying Elf-bowling instead." Kill Five Ettins. Reward: 2-5 silver ore.
- "You find a group of lost nobles, too frightened to move because of the horrific howls of ogres from across the valley." Kill five ogres Reward: 50-100 silver.
